Top Software Development Companies in the UK

Each software development company in the UK below was scored on six criteria: verified independent review volume, review rating, published pricing, share of work that is genuinely software development, UK head office and UK delivery, and client-reported project size. Every rating, review count, hourly band, headcount band and founding year was read from the company’s live Clutch profile on 30 August 2026, and every head office was checked against the company’s own website.

Dotsquares

4.7 (100 reviews) Visit Website

Dotsquares holds 100 verified Clutch reviews, the largest review base of any UK software development company ranked here, and has been trading since 2002. Clutch sizes the team at 1,000 to 9,999 people and records a broad mix spanning custom software, AI consulting and development, e-commerce, mobile, web and managed IT. The $25 to $49 band alongside a $1,000 minimum reflects a UK client-facing structure with a large offshore engineering organisation, which makes it as much an IT outsourcing company in the UK as a project studio. That model is why the rate is what it is, and it should be discussed openly in your first call. One correction worth making: it is often listed under London, but its UK head office is Albourne Court in West Sussex, with London as a second office.

Minimum project size: $1,000+ · Most common project size: $10,000 to $49,999, across 67 reviewed projects

Best for: Buyers who want a UK contracting entity with a long trading history and offshore economics, on projects in the $10,000 to $50,000 range.

02

IIH Global

4.8 (79 reviews) Visit Website

IIH Global publishes the lowest band of any custom software development company in the UK in this ranking, under $25 per hour, and holds 79 verified reviews at 4.8. Clutch records the service split as 35 percent custom software development and 35 percent mobile app development, with AI and web making up the rest. The stand-out figure is client-reported project size: 67 reviewed projects sit under $10,000, which is the smallest typical engagement of any firm here by a wide margin. This is a high-volume, small-project operation and it is unusually good at that specific shape of work. It works from Cardinal Point on Park Road in Rickmansworth.

Minimum project size: $1,000+ · Most common project size: under $10,000, across 67 reviewed projects

Best for: Small businesses and internal teams commissioning a defined four-figure or low five-figure build with a UK point of contact.

03

Digiryte

4.9 (51 reviews) Visit Website

Digiryte is the strongest evidence in this ranking that the best software development companies in the UK are not all in London. Working from Blue Tower at MediaCityUK in Salford, this custom software development company carries 51 Clutch reviews at 4.9, and 36 of its reviewed projects sit in the $200,000 to $999,999 band, the heaviest client-reported spend of any firm here at a mid-market $50 to $99 rate. Its own website names NHS digital programmes, CERN data infrastructure, Channel 4 engineering teams and ARUP enterprise platforms as client work, a set of named references most agencies at this rate cannot offer.

Minimum project size: $25,000+ · Most common project size: $200,000 to $999,999, across 36 reviewed projects

Best for: Enterprise and public sector programmes above $200,000 where governance matters and the London premium does not add value.

04

3 SIDED CUBE

4.9 (49 reviews) Visit Website

3 SIDED CUBE is a custom software development company in the UK built around mission-driven work, and Clutch’s review summary records clients specifically praising alignment with that kind of brief. The recorded mix is 40 percent mobile app development, 30 percent custom software, 15 percent AI and 15 percent UX. It publishes the joint-highest band in this ranking at $100 to $149 with a $50,000 minimum, the highest entry point of the ten, so it is not the right call for a first prototype. It has worked out of Bournemouth since 2009 and has since added London and US offices, but Dorset remains the head office.

Minimum project size: $50,000+ · Most common project size: $50,000 to $199,999, across 38 reviewed projects

Best for: Charities, health organisations and social impact programmes budgeting $50,000 upward for a product with a mobile front end.

05

Goodspeed

5.0 (45 reviews) Visit Website

Goodspeed is the youngest firm in this ranking, founded in 2022, and it has accumulated 45 Clutch reviews at a straight 5.0 in that time, a faster review build than any other firm on this list. Its own site positions it as an AI development agency built around short delivery cycles, quoting eight to twelve weeks from idea to live product. Client-reported project sizes sit in the $10,000 to $49,999 band with a $5,000 minimum. Two caveats. The trading history is short, so references at your budget level are essential rather than optional. And while it trades as a London agency, its registered office is in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire.

Minimum project size: $5,000+ · Most common project size: $10,000 to $49,999, across 33 reviewed projects

Best for: Teams that want to ship an AI feature or product in weeks rather than quarters, on a five-figure budget.

06

Tech Alchemy

5.0 (33 reviews) Visit Website

Tech Alchemy holds 33 Clutch reviews at a straight 5.0, and its service mix is the most distinctive in this ranking: Clutch records 40 percent blockchain, 20 percent mobile, 20 percent web, 10 percent custom software and 10 percent IT strategy consulting. For most buyers that blockchain weighting is a reason to look elsewhere. If you need a software development agency in London working on tokenised assets, digital identity or a distributed ledger integration, it narrows the field considerably at a $25 to $49 band. Its registered office is on Paul Street in EC2A.

Minimum project size: $25,000+ · Most common project size: under $49,999, across 25 reviewed projects

Best for: Fintech and Web3 products where distributed ledger work is central rather than bolted on.

GoodCore has been trading since 2005 as a custom software development company in the UK and holds 31 reviews at 5.0, working from Airport House on Purley Way in Croydon. Its own site frames the practice around business-critical software: platform development built for resilience, enterprise AI with guardrails and audit trails, and legacy modernisation that avoids unnecessary rewrites. Client-reported project sizes back that positioning, sitting in the $50,000 to $199,999 band. The combination of a $25 to $49 published band and six-figure typical projects is unusual, and it means the delivery model is worth understanding in detail before you compare quotes.

Minimum project size: $25,000+ · Most common project size: $50,000 to $199,999, across 27 reviewed projects

Best for: Mid-market and enterprise buyers modernising a system the business depends on, where compliance and continuity are non-negotiable.

08

Coreblue

5.0 (23 reviews) Visit Website

Coreblue publishes $100 to $149 and, on its own website, states a fully UK-based team and security accreditation, positioning itself around high-assurance bespoke software development in the UK. It is the clearest answer in this ranking for buyers who cannot accept offshore delivery, whether for contractual, security clearance or data residency reasons, and it is the only firm here making that claim explicitly. Every engagement starts with a discovery or planning phase, stated openly on the site. Clutch records 23 reviews at 5.0 with typical projects in the $50,000 to $199,999 band. On location: several directories file it under London, but it is a Plymouth company, at The Apex on Derriford Business Park, registered as company 10290102.

Minimum project size: $10,000+ · Most common project size: $50,000 to $199,999, across 17 reviewed projects

Best for: Defence, regulated and public sector adjacent buyers who need every engineer inside the UK and can evidence it.

09

Transparity

4.7 (22 reviews) Visit Website

Transparity is the largest UK-headquartered firm in this ranking after Dotsquares, at 250 to 999 people, and it operates as both a custom software development company and an IT outsourcing company in the UK. Its Clutch mix spreads evenly across custom software, AI development, cloud consulting, enterprise application modernisation and managed IT services. Client-reported project sizes sit in the $200,000 to $999,999 band. It moved its head office to Microsoft’s UK base at 2 Kingdom Street in Paddington during 2025, having previously been based in Dorset. Clutch’s review summary is the most balanced of any firm here: roughly 80 percent highlight project management and communication, while about 20 percent flag a need for more proactive client engagement and stronger in-house design. Raise both in your reference calls.

Minimum project size: $10,000+ · Most common project size: $200,000 to $999,999, across 12 reviewed projects

Best for: Cloud-first enterprise programmes where the software build sits alongside migration, managed services and security work.

10

Old.St Labs

5.0 (22 reviews) Visit Website

Old.St Labs records the heaviest AI weighting of any firm in this ranking: 40 percent AI development, with custom software, mobile and web at 20 percent each. Founded in 2020 and registered in South Kensington, it holds 22 Clutch reviews at a straight 5.0 with typical projects in the $10,000 to $49,999 band and a $10,000 minimum. That combination, an AI-first mix at a mid-market rate with a low entry point, makes it the most useful firm here for an organisation running its first serious AI build rather than a broad platform programme.

Minimum project size: $10,000+ · Most common project size: $10,000 to $49,999, across 17 reviewed projects

Best for: London teams that want a first production AI feature and want to start small before scaling the engagement.

What Are the Parameters We Considered?

Six criteria, applied identically to every firm. Where a company could not be verified against a live Clutch profile or its own website, the claim was cut rather than estimated.

01

Verified Independent Reviews

Ratings and review counts read from live Clutch profiles on 30 August 2026, counted for volume as well as average. A 5.0 from 22 clients and a 4.7 from 100 are different claims, and an honest ranking shows both.

02

Published Pricing

Whether the firm states an hourly band and a minimum project size without requiring a discovery call. All ten do, which is not true of the wider directory.

03

Software Development Share

The percentage of each firm’s work Clutch records as custom software development or closely adjacent engineering, rather than marketing or design retainers filed under a software category.

04

UK Head Office, Independently Checked

A UK head office confirmed against the company’s own website and Companies House, not merely a location label on a directory profile. This check moved two firms out of London on this page.

05

Client-Reported Project Size

The band that appears most often in each firm’s verified reviews, which shows the engagement size the team is actually built to run.

06

Trading History

Founding year from the Clutch profile, from 2002 at Dotsquares to 2022 at Goodspeed. Longevity matters here because you are buying a maintenance relationship as well as a build.

The best software development companies in the UK, compared

Picking a software development company in the UK is a filtering problem before it is a judgement problem. Clutch listed 2,101 custom software development companies in the United Kingdom when this page was checked on 30 August 2026. This ranking covers ten with a UK head office, a published hourly band, a published minimum, and a verified review record you can open yourself. Cross-check any figure on Clutch, or browse the full MatchFast rankings directory.

One finding shapes everything below. No UK-headquartered firm in this ranking publishes above $149 per hour. In MatchFast’s New York ranking, six of ten firms publish $150 to $199. The firms inside the UK Clutch directory that do publish $150 to $199, including Infinum and thoughtbot, are headquartered in New York. Bespoke software development in the UK is priced below the American market at the published-band level, and that gap is the single strongest commercial argument for a UK partner.

The second finding is about geography, and it is the one that surprised us. Half of these firms are not in London.

Which UK firms are British companies, and which are international groups

Every firm ranked above has a UK head office, checked against the company’s own website and its Companies House record rather than against a directory label alone. Several highly rated companies in the same directory carry a London location label but are headquartered elsewhere. All four below are credible suppliers. They are listed separately because a London label is not the same as a British company.

Company Actual head office Rating Reviews Price/hr Employees Source
Andersen Inc. Warszawa, Poland 4.9 129 $50 – $99 / hr 1,000 – 9,999 Clutch
Infinum New York, United States 4.8 58 $150 – $199 / hr 250 – 999 Clutch
Future Processing Gliwice, Poland 4.7 51 $50 – $99 / hr 250 – 999 Clutch
thoughtbot New York, United States 4.9 39 $150 – $199 / hr 50 – 249 Clutch

Andersen carries 129 verified reviews, more than any UK-headquartered firm in this ranking, and functions in practice as an IT outsourcing company in the UK with a Warsaw engineering base. If review volume is your primary filter, it belongs on your list. If a UK contracting entity, UK employment law and a UK-resident delivery team are requirements, the ten above are the ones that satisfy them.

Most of the best UK software companies are not in London

This is the finding that should change how you shortlist. Checking each company’s own site and Companies House record rather than its directory listing, five of the ten are headquartered in London and five are not.

Headquartered in London Headquartered elsewhere in the UK
Goodspeed, Tech Alchemy, GoodCore Software (Croydon), Transparity (Paddington), Old.St Labs Dotsquares (Albourne, West Sussex), IIH Global (Rickmansworth), Digiryte (Salford), 3 SIDED CUBE (Bournemouth), Coreblue (Plymouth)

Two of those are commonly listed as London firms and are not. Dotsquares runs its UK head office from Albourne Court in West Sussex, with a London office as well. Coreblue is a Plymouth company at Derriford Business Park, registered as company 10290102, and appears under London in more than one directory. Goodspeed sits in the middle: it trades as a London AI agency, and its registered office is in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire.

None of that makes them worse suppliers. It matters because the two firms with the largest client-reported project spend in this entire ranking, Digiryte in Salford and Transparity, are not what a London-only shortlist would surface, and because Digiryte publishes $50 to $99 for work a London firm with a comparable client list would price at $100 to $149. If you are filtering inside the M25 you are filtering out the strongest value in the market.

How much does software development cost in the UK in 2026?

The table below is built from the project size band that appears most often in each firm’s verified Clutch reviews. It is what clients reported spending, not a survey estimate.

Client-reported project band Firms whose typical project lands here What that buys
Under $10,000 IIH Global A contained piece of work: one module, a defined integration, a small internal tool or a website with light custom functionality.
$10,000 to $49,999 Dotsquares, Goodspeed, Tech Alchemy, Old.St Labs A single-platform build or a first production release with a defined feature set, standard authentication and a straightforward backend.
$50,000 to $199,999 3 SIDED CUBE, GoodCore Software, Coreblue A full product: custom design system, payments, integrations, admin layer, real QA cycles and a maintenance plan.
$200,000 to $999,999 Digiryte, Transparity Enterprise programmes: legacy modernisation, system integration, single sign-on, data migration, accessibility auditing and phased release governance.

The variable that moves these numbers most is delivery structure. A custom software development company in the UK publishing $100 to $149 with a UK-resident engineering team, which is what Coreblue states on its own site, is selling something different from a firm publishing $25 to $49 with a large offshore organisation behind a UK entity, which is what Dotsquares and IIH Global are structured around. Both are legitimate. Ask which one you are buying and get it in the proposal, because the same brief under each model comes back with a three-times price gap and no explanation.

The second variable is discovery. Every firm ranked here with a $25,000 or higher minimum runs a paid discovery phase first. Projects that skip it write the specification during development, and the cost of that shows up as change orders in month three.

Minimum project size is the fastest filter

Because published bands cluster tightly, the minimum engagement is what actually sorts this list, and it is the quickest way to avoid wasting a fortnight on a proposal that was never going to fit.

Minimum project size Firms
$1,000+ Dotsquares, IIH Global
$5,000+ Goodspeed
$10,000+ Coreblue, Transparity, Old.St Labs
$25,000+ Digiryte, Tech Alchemy, GoodCore Software
$50,000+ 3 SIDED CUBE

Software development agency London: which specialism fits your build

Specialism is where the London firms separate most cleanly, and it is the question to answer before you shortlist a software development agency in London. Tech Alchemy records 40 percent blockchain. Old.St Labs records 40 percent AI development. GoodCore positions around legacy modernisation and enterprise AI. Goodspeed positions around short AI delivery cycles. Transparity is cloud-first and Microsoft-centred. Those are five genuinely different businesses sitting at similar published rates, and a brief sent to all five would get five incomparable proposals back.

There is a second reason to lead with specialism. The capital’s rates are compressed: every software development agency in London on this list publishes between $25 and $149, so price will not sort your shortlist the way it does in New York. What sorts it is whether the agency has built the specific thing you need before. Ask each for two references in your sector and at your budget, and the list usually reduces itself to two candidates without any further work from you.

How we ranked these UK software development companies

MatchFast does not accept payment for placement and nothing on this page can be bought. Each company was scored against the six criteria above, and every claim that could not be verified from a live Clutch profile or the company’s own website was cut rather than estimated.

Review evidence carried the most weight, counted for volume as well as average, which is why Dotsquares leads at 4.7 while several 5.0-rated firms sit lower. A 4.7 across 100 projects is stronger evidence than a 5.0 across 22, and any ranking that sorts purely on rating puts the smallest firms on top. Pricing transparency came second. A custom software development company in the UK also had to show software as the majority of its recorded service mix, which removed several well-known agencies whose Clutch profile is mostly marketing and design.

Head office was an inclusion filter rather than a scoring criterion, and it was checked against each company’s own website and Companies House rather than the directory label. That check is what moved Coreblue from London to Plymouth and Dotsquares from London to West Sussex on this page, and it is the step most rankings of UK software companies skip.

Clutch itself states that it may earn a fee for some placements in its directories. MatchFast used Clutch as a source for review data and company facts, not for ordering. The sequence above is MatchFast’s own.

The full MatchFast ranking methodology — the criteria, the named data sources, and how every head office is verified against the company itself — is published in full and applies to this page.

IT outsourcing company UK: when a dedicated team beats a fixed-price build

Hiring an IT outsourcing company in the UK is a different transaction from commissioning a build, and confusing the two is the most common procurement mistake in this category. With a fixed-price build you buy an outcome. With an IT outsourcing company in the UK you buy capacity, and you keep the product decisions yourself.

Three firms in this ranking are structured for it. Dotsquares runs a UK entity over an engineering organisation of 1,000 to 9,999 people. Transparity carries 250 to 999 staff across managed services, cloud and custom software. IIH Global publishes an under $25 band that only a large offshore bench can support.

The test for any IT outsourcing company in the UK is not the rate, it is the exit. Ask what happens after twelve months: who holds the repository, how knowledge transfers, and what notice period applies. A supplier that cannot answer those three questions in writing is selling dependency rather than capacity. One more check: some firms marketed as an IT outsourcing company in the UK are recruitment businesses with a technical vocabulary. Ask whether the engineers are employees or contractors sourced per engagement, because that determines whether the team you meet in the pitch is the team you keep in month six.

Bespoke software development UK versus configuring an off-the-shelf product

Bespoke software development in the UK means a system built for one organisation’s process and owned by that organisation. The alternative is licensing a product and configuring it. The decision usually gets framed as a cost comparison, and that framing is wrong.

Off-the-shelf wins when your process is genuinely standard. Bespoke wins when the process is the competitive advantage, when per-seat licence costs scale faster than headcount, or when integration with existing systems is the real work. Every firm ranked here builds bespoke systems rather than reselling licences, which is why the cost table above starts higher than a SaaS subscription and ends lower than a decade of licence renewals.

One caveat worth naming. Bespoke software development in the UK transfers maintenance to you. A licensed product is patched by its vendor; a bespoke system needs a retainer, and the firms here that publish a maintenance plan are the ones to shortlist.

Engagement models

  • Fixed price suits a locked specification after a paid discovery phase. You trade flexibility for certainty and the firm prices in a risk buffer.
  • Time and materials suits products where discovery continues into development. You gain flexibility and carry the budget risk, so require sprint-level burn reporting.
  • Dedicated team suits organisations with internal product leadership and no engineering capacity. You direct the work and the firm supplies engineers on a monthly rate. Dotsquares, Transparity and the international groups listed above build much of their business this way.

Red flags when hiring a software development company in the UK

  • A fixed quote arriving within 24 hours with no discovery conversation.
  • Case studies without a named client you can verify independently.
  • Reluctance to say where the engineering team physically sits, or a vague answer about a delivery centre.
  • A published band far below the UK market with no explanation of the structure behind it.
  • No written maintenance plan, or a proposal that treats launch as the finish line.
  • A London address on a profile and a registered office elsewhere. Ask for the company number and check it at Companies House before you sign — as the table above shows, the label alone proves nothing.
  • A day rate quoted without stating how many hours it contains.

How to Choose Between These Companies

Five questions that separate the shortlist faster than any pitch deck will.

01

Ask Where the Engineers Sit

The published band tells you the delivery model before the sales call does. Under $50 per hour in the UK almost always means offshore engineering behind a UK entity. That model works — an unclear answer to a direct question does not.

02

Match the Minimum to Your Budget

Dotsquares and IIH Global start at $1,000. 3 SIDED CUBE starts at $50,000. Approaching the wrong tier costs you a fortnight and produces either a decline or a padded quote.

03

Request Two References at Your Budget

A firm’s record on a $400,000 programme says little about how it will run your $40,000 build. Ask for clients whose project size matched yours, and call them.

04

Confirm IP Assignment and Repo Access

UK contracts should assign intellectual property on final payment. Ask for commit access from the first sprint and confirm whether third-party components carry ongoing licence obligations.

05

Agree the Post-Launch Retainer Before Launch

Software needs dependency updates, platform policy changes and bug fixes indefinitely. Settle the monthly figure and response times during negotiation, not after the first production incident.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does software development cost in the UK in 2026?

Software development cost in the UK runs from under $25 to $149 per hour across the published bands of the ten firms ranked here. Client-reported project sizes on Clutch fall into four tiers: under $10,000 for contained work, $10,000 to $49,999 for a first release, $50,000 to $199,999 for a full product, and $200,000 upward for enterprise programmes. Verified 30 August 2026.

Which software development company in the UK is best for a startup?

Dotsquares and IIH Global accept engagements from $1,000, Goodspeed from $5,000, and Old.St Labs from $10,000. Each shows typical projects in the five-figure range or below. Firms with a $25,000 or $50,000 minimum, including Digiryte, Tech Alchemy, GoodCore and 3 SIDED CUBE, are structured for later-stage builds.

Are UK software developers cheaper than US developers?

At the published band level, yes. No firm among the ten ranked here publishes above $149 per hour, while six of the ten in MatchFast’s New York ranking publish $150 to $199. The firms in the UK Clutch directory that do publish $150 to $199, including Infinum and thoughtbot, are headquartered in New York rather than Britain.

Are the best UK software companies all in London?

No, and this is the most useful thing on this page. Checked against company websites and Companies House rather than directory labels, five of the ten are headquartered outside London: Dotsquares in West Sussex, IIH Global in Rickmansworth, Digiryte in Salford, 3 SIDED CUBE in Bournemouth and Coreblue in Plymouth. Digiryte and Transparity carry the largest client-reported project spend of the ten, and Digiryte publishes $50 to $99 for work a comparable London firm would price at $100 to $149.

What is bespoke software development in the UK?

Bespoke software development means software built for one organisation’s specific process and owned by that organisation, rather than an off-the-shelf product licensed and configured. It costs more upfront and removes per-seat licence fees and workflow compromises. Every firm ranked here builds bespoke systems rather than reselling licences.

Do UK software development companies work with offshore teams?

Several do, and the published rate usually reveals it. Any firm publishing under $50 per hour typically runs a UK client-facing team with offshore engineering, which is the standard structure for an IT outsourcing company in the UK. Coreblue states a fully UK-based team on its own site. Ask directly and require the answer in the proposal.

Who owns the code after a UK agency builds it?

Any custom software development company in the UK should assign intellectual property to the client on final payment, and confirm it in writing. Check the assignment clause before signing, request repository access from the first sprint, and ask whether third-party components carry ongoing licence obligations after handover.

Should I hire a London agency or a regional one?

Regional firms carry the largest client-reported project sizes in this ranking. Digiryte in Salford publishes $50 to $99 with typical projects of $200,000 to $999,999. A London agency with a comparable client list usually publishes $100 to $149. Unless you need frequent in-person sessions, the regional discount costs you nothing in delivery quality.

Does MatchFast charge companies to appear in this ranking?

No. Placement is not for sale and cannot be influenced by payment. Companies can submit themselves for editorial consideration through the listing page, which does not affect placement. Any commercial arrangement is labelled separately and never appears inside an editorial ranking.
